Preview

The Los Angeles Angels wrap up their road series against the Washington Nationals on Sunday, September 13, with a 1:35 PM ET afternoon matinee at Nationals Park. Grayson Rodriguez gets the ball for Los Angeles against Washington's Jake Irvin in what shapes up as a quality pitching matchup to close out the weekend. With the regular season winding down and every game carrying weight in the standings, this is not a game the Angels can afford to sleepwalk through on the road.

Starting Pitchers: Grayson Rodriguez vs. Jake Irvin

Rodriguez takes the mound for the Angels in what is a notable assignment. The right-hander will need to be sharp against a Nationals lineup that features some legitimate offensive weapons at the top of the order. For the Angels, keeping Washington's bats quiet early is the clearest path to a road win.

Irvin counters for the Nationals. The right-hander has been a steady presence in Washington's rotation, and the Angels will need to make him work deep into counts and get into that bullpen as early as possible. Irvin is not a pitcher you can sleep on, and the Angels' lineup will need to be disciplined and patient from the first pitch.

  • José Tena — 2B
  • Jacob Young — CF

Keys to Watch for the Angels

Handle the Top of Washington's Order

James Wood leading off for the Nationals is a problem Rodriguez must solve early. Wood has the tools to hurt a pitching staff on his own, and with Abimelec Ortiz and CJ Abrams lurking in the middle of the lineup, any early inning damage can snowball quickly. Rodriguez needs to establish himself against Wood and prevent him from setting the table in the first few frames.

Patience Against Irvin

The Angels' offense has to make Irvin work. Getting him into the fifth and sixth innings with a high pitch count gives Los Angeles access to a Nationals bullpen that can be exploited. Long at-bats, working counts, and avoiding early-count pop-outs is how this lineup gets to the back end of Washington's staff.

Road Execution

Sunday afternoon road games in September can be traps. The Angels need clean defense, smart baserunning, and a Rodriguez performance that gives the bullpen some rest heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

How to Watch Angels at Nationals

The game can be seen on ABTV, presented by Pechanga Resort Casino, for Angels fans. Washington viewers can catch it on Nationals.TV. Radio coverage is available on KLAA 830 for Los Angeles and WJFK 106.7 The Fan for the Washington market.

Prediction

This one comes down to Rodriguez. If he commands his fastball and keeps Wood and Abrams off the bases in the early innings, the Angels have a real shot to steal a road win on a Sunday afternoon. Washington's lineup has enough depth to make it uncomfortable, but Irvin is hittable if the Angels stay patient. Call it a close game that goes to whichever starter limits the big inning. Angels take it, 4-2.
