Preview
The Los Angeles Angels host the New York Yankees at Angel Stadium on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, with first pitch scheduled for 9:38 PM ET. Grayson Rodriguez takes the mound for the Halos against one of the most accomplished pitchers in the game, Gerrit Cole. With the regular season winding down, every game carries weight, and a marquee matchup between these two franchises under the Anaheim lights is exactly the kind of September baseball that Angels fans show up for.
Pitching Matchup: Grayson Rodriguez vs. Gerrit Cole
Rodriguez gets the ball for the Angels in what is a significant assignment. The right-hander has the stuff to compete with any lineup in the American League, and facing the Yankees demands he bring his best. His ability to command the zone and sequence his pitches will be the central storyline on the mound for Anaheim.
Cole, meanwhile, is one of the premier starters in baseball. He has the experience and the arsenal to suppress an Angels lineup, so the Halos will need to be disciplined at the plate and make him work deep into counts. Squaring up Cole is never easy, but it is absolutely necessary if the Angels want to put runs on the board.

Keys to Watch for the Angels
Mike Trout in the Middle of the Order
Batting second, Trout is the engine of this lineup. If the Angels are going to do damage against Cole, it almost certainly runs through number 27. Getting Trout into favorable counts and on base early sets the table for the middle of the order.
Grayson Rodriguez Limiting the Big Inning
The Yankees are capable of putting together multi-run innings in a hurry. Rodriguez needs to be sharp with runners on base and avoid the kind of cluster that can flip a close game. His composure in pressure situations will be the X-factor on the Angels side.
Bottom of the Order Contribution
Christian Moore, Josh Lowe, Oswald Peraza, and Tyler Heineman batting sixth through ninth gives the lineup a chance to cycle back to the top and extend innings. Against an elite arm like Cole, it is often the bottom third turning over that creates the unexpected opportunity.
Game Prediction
This is a tough draw. Cole is a legitimate ace, and the Angels will have to earn every run they get. Rodriguez is capable of matching him inning for inning, and Angel Stadium gives the Halos a familiar environment to work with. Expect a low-scoring, tightly contested game. If Rodriguez is on and the lineup can scratch out two or three against Cole, the Angels have a genuine shot. This one figures to come down to the late innings. Angels 3, Yankees 2.
