Preview

The Los Angeles Angels welcome the Detroit Tigers to Angel Stadium on Sunday, July 19, for a 4:07 PM ET first pitch. Ryan Johnson gets the ball for the Halos opposite Detroit's Casey Mize in what shapes up as an intriguing mid-summer pitching matchup. With the bulk of the regular season still ahead, every game carries real weight — and an afternoon showdown at home against a Tigers club that features legitimate young talent is exactly the kind of test the Angels need to take seriously.

Angels vs. Tigers Starting Pitchers: Ryan Johnson vs. Casey Mize

Ryan Johnson draws the start for Los Angeles. The right-hander will need to navigate a Tigers lineup that is younger and more dynamic than it used to be. Detroit counters with Casey Mize, a former top overall pick who has shown flashes of frontline ability throughout his career. Neither pitcher's current season stats are available going into this one, so the on-field performance Sunday will do the talking. Watch how each starter handles the opposing lineup's middle of the order — that will likely determine the tone of the game.

  • 7. Jo Adell, RF

  • 2. Dillon Dingler, DH
  • 3. Colt Keith, 3B
  • 4. Riley Greene, LF
  • 5. Spencer Torkelson, 1B

  • 7. Hao-Yu Lee, 2B

Keys to Watch in Angels vs. Tigers

  • Mike Trout in the two-hole: Hitting second in this lineup, Trout remains one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball when he is on the field. His ability to get on base and set up protection for Nolan Schanuel and Jorge Soler makes the top of this order genuinely dangerous. If Trout has a good afternoon at the plate, the Angels offense will be humming.
  • Jorge Soler's power upside: The Angels need Soler to punish mistakes in the heart of the order. As a cleanup DH, his power production is critical to Los Angeles generating crooked numbers against a capable Mize.
  • Riley Greene and Colt Keith for Detroit: The Tigers' middle of the order, anchored by Greene batting cleanup and Keith hitting third, represents Detroit's biggest threat. Johnson will need to keep the ball out of the zone these two can drive. If he does, Detroit's lineup gets manageable in a hurry.
  • Jo Adell's role in the outfield corners: Adell hits seventh and plays right field. He remains a player the Angels organization is clearly invested in developing, and his at-bats this summer have real developmental stakes attached to them.

Prediction

This one comes down to pitching. If Ryan Johnson can keep Detroit's young core — Keith, Greene, and Torkelson — from doing damage early, the Angels have the lineup depth to grind out a win at home. The crowd at Angel Stadium on a Sunday afternoon gives the Halos an added edge. Expect a close game with Los Angeles taking it by a run, leaning on Trout and Soler to provide the difference-making moments. Angels 4, Tigers 3.
