Preview

The Los Angeles Angels host the Philadelphia Phillies at Angel Stadium on Saturday, August 29, with first pitch set for 10:07 PM ET. Ryan Johnson gets the ball for the Halos against Philadelphia's Cristopher Sánchez in an interleague matchup that gives this Angels club a prime opportunity to make a statement on their home turf. With Zach Neto leading off and Mike Trout slotted second in the lineup, the Angels are sending out a capable order against one of the more consistent left-handed starters in the National League.

Angels vs. Phillies: Saturday Night Pitching Matchup at Angel Stadium

Ryan Johnson draws the start for Los Angeles. The right-hander will need to be sharp against a Phillies lineup that is built to do damage. Cristopher Sánchez gets the nod for Philadelphia. The left-hander has been a dependable rotation piece for the Phillies, and the Angels' lineup will need to find ways to make him work deep into counts and get him out of his rhythm early.

Keys to Watch for the Angels

Ryan Johnson's Command Early

Johnson's ability to establish himself in the first two innings will set the tone for the entire game. If he can keep the Phillies off the bases early and avoid the big inning, the Angels' bullpen gets a chance to work in high-leverage situations rather than damage control. Against a lineup with the Phillies' firepower, letting runners pile up is not an option.

Mike Trout and the Middle of the Order

Trout batting second gives the Angels a legitimate threat near the top of the order every time through the lineup. How Trout and Vaughn Grissom perform against the left-handed Sánchez will be a central storyline. If the Angels are going to string together runs, it likely runs through those two bats.

Getting to Sánchez Early

Sánchez is the kind of pitcher who gets more comfortable as a game progresses. The Angels are best served by attacking him in the first two or three innings, putting pressure on his command, and forcing Philadelphia's bullpen into action before the late innings. Jose Siri and Christian Moore in the four and five spots provide legitimate run-producing upside if the top of the order sets the table.

Prediction

This is a winnable game at home, and the Angels have the lineup depth to put runs on the board against Sánchez if they are disciplined at the plate. The question is whether Johnson can give the team five or six quality innings and keep the game within reach. Expect a competitive, close game that hinges on a key at-bat or two in the middle innings. Angels 4, Phillies 3.
