Preview
The Los Angeles Angels welcome the Athletics to Angel Stadium on Saturday, June 27, for a 9:38 PM ET first pitch that could carry some real momentum into the back half of the season. Reid Detmers gets the ball for the Halos against Athletics right-hander Jack Perkins in what shapes up as a compelling pitching matchup between two young arms still carving out their identities in the big leagues. With the AL West always competitive, every game against a division rival matters — even deep into June.
Pitching Matchup: Detmers vs. Perkins
Reid Detmers is the story on the Angels' side of this one. The lefty out of Louisville has the kind of arsenal — a sharp curveball, a deceptive changeup — that gives opposing lineups fits when he's locating his pitches. The question with Detmers has always been consistency. When he's dialed in and working both sides of the plate, he can look like a legitimate mid-rotation piece. When he loses his command early, it can unravel fast. Tonight's performance will tell us a lot about where his head is at this stretch of the season.
On the other side, Jack Perkins has been part of a young Athletics rotation that's been built on athleticism and projection. He can run his fastball up in the zone with some authority, but hitters who lay off the chase pitches and force him to work in the strike zone have had success. The Angels' lineup needs to take that approach from the jump.

Keys to Watch for the Angels
Jorge Soler in the Cleanup Spot
Soler batting fourth as the designated hitter is a matchup the Angels should be targeting aggressively. His raw power against right-handed pitching is legitimate, and if Perkins leaves anything elevated in the zone, Soler has the bat speed to punish it. A big night from the cleanup spot could set the tone for the entire offense.
Zach Neto Setting the Table
With Neto leading off, the Angels have a shortstop who can work counts, put the ball in play, and create problems for opposing pitchers right out of the gate. His ability to reach base and get into scoring position for the top of the order is a critical ingredient in how this offense flows.
Jo Adell and Wade Meckler in the Middle of the Order
Adell and Meckler hitting fifth and sixth gives the Angels a legitimate threat even after the heart of the order. Adell's power potential is undeniable, and if he's seeing the ball well against Perkins' fastball, this lineup can put up crooked numbers in bunches.
Detmers' Command Early
Watch the first two innings closely. If Detmers is throwing his curveball for strikes early and keeping the Athletics off-balance with the changeup, this is a game he can win deep into. If he's battling his mechanics and running up pitch counts, the Angels' bullpen could be tested on a Saturday night.
Prediction
The Angels take this one at home. Detmers puts together a quality start — six innings, two earned runs — and the offense does enough behind Soler and Neto to pull out a 4-2 win in front of the Angel Stadium faithful. Catch the action on NBCSCA or on the radio at KLAA 830.
