Preview
The Los Angeles Angels host the Houston Astros at Angel Stadium on Tuesday, July 28, with first pitch scheduled for 9:38 PM ET. Reid Detmers takes the hill for the Halos opposite Houston's Peter Lambert in what shapes up as a meaningful AL West matchup. With the Angels sporting a lineup that puts Zach Neto at the top and Mike Trout batting second, there's real offensive firepower in the order. Against a division rival, every game carries extra weight — and tonight is no exception.
Starting Pitchers: Detmers vs. Lambert
Reid Detmers gets the start for Los Angeles. The left-hander has shown throughout his career that he can keep lineups off-balance with sharp breaking stuff and the ability to generate swings and misses. How deep he can pitch into the game will go a long way toward determining whether the Angels' bullpen stays fresh heading into the rest of this week's series.
Peter Lambert draws the assignment for Houston. Lambert has made his way through the Astros' rotation and will look to keep the Angels' lineup from doing damage early. With Jorge Soler sitting in the cleanup spot and capable of doing serious damage against any arm, Lambert will need to be sharp.

Keys to Watch
Detmers' Command Early
The Astros are disciplined at the plate and will work counts. If Detmers gets ahead of hitters and avoids putting runners on base early, the Angels' defense and bullpen will be in a much better position. Walks to the top of Houston's lineup are the fastest way to give this game away.
Soler and the Middle of the Order
Jorge Soler in the cleanup spot is the kind of bat that can change a game with one swing. If Neto, Trout, and Schanuel get on base ahead of him, the Angels have the ingredients for a big inning against Lambert. Getting Soler a pitch to drive in a meaningful situation could be the difference.
Jo Adell's At-Bats
Adell batting seventh gives him a chance to come up in situations where the game is still in flux. He has the raw power to do damage, and a productive night from the bottom of the order would take pressure off the top.
Logan O'Hoppe's Game-Calling
With Detmers on the mound, how O'Hoppe sequences pitches and manages Houston's hitters will be critical. The battery's ability to keep the Astros guessing is a quiet key to this one.
Prediction
Detmers has enough in his arsenal to give the Angels a quality start, and the lineup — built around Trout and Soler — has the pop to support him. This one plays close into the late innings, but Angel Stadium gives the Halos a home-crowd edge they'll want to lean on. Angels win a tight one, 4-2.
