Preview
The Los Angeles Angels head to Sutter Health Park on Friday, June 19 to open a road series against the Athletics, with right-hander José Soriano getting the ball in a 9:40 PM ET first pitch. This is a legitimate regular-season AL West matchup — two teams fighting within the same division — and every game in June carries real standings weight. Oakland counters with Jeffrey Springs on the mound. Catch it on KLAA 830 locally or on ABTV, presented by Pechanga Resort Casino.
Pitching Matchup: Soriano vs. Springs
José Soriano has been one of the more intriguing arms in the Angels rotation, a hard-throwing right-hander with swing-and-miss stuff when he's commanding his fastball down in the zone. The key for Soriano tonight will be limiting the A's ability to work counts and make contact in hitter-friendly Sacramento air. He needs to be efficient early and protect the bullpen in what figures to be a competitive, low-margin game.
Jeffrey Springs is a crafty left-hander who lives off deception and pitch tunneling. He won't overpower Angels hitters, but he doesn't need to. Springs thrives when he can get ahead in counts and use his changeup to generate weak contact. The Angels will need to stay disciplined at the plate and resist chasing his off-speed stuff out of the zone, particularly from the left side of the lineup.
Oakland Athletics Lineup to Watch
The A's are sending out a legitimately dangerous order. Zack Gelof leads off at third base — a contact-and-power combo who can set the table or do damage himself. Nick Kurtz bats second at first base and is already drawing attention as one of Oakland's most promising young bats. Behind them, Shea Langeliers at catcher and Tyler Soderstrom in left field give the Athletics real middle-of-the-order punch. Jacob Wilson slots in at shortstop batting fifth, and Lawrence Butler in right rounds out a lineup that can hurt you in multiple ways.
Jeff McNeil hitting ninth at second base is the kind of crafty, contact-oriented bat that can extend innings and make life difficult for a starter trying to pitch to contact. Soriano can't afford to let the bottom of the order flip back around to Gelof and Kurtz with runners on base.
Keys to the Game for the Angels
- Soriano must establish fastball command early and avoid falling behind to Oakland's patient hitters in the middle of the lineup.
- The Angels' offense needs to identify Springs' arm-side run on his changeup and lay off the pitch when it's working down and away.
- Limiting extra-base hits in Sacramento's open ballpark is critical — gaps and alleys are punishing, and the A's have the speed and power to exploit them.
- Bullpen management matters. If Soriano can deliver six quality innings, the Angels avoid taxing a relief corps that may have worked earlier in the week.
Prediction
This is the kind of June AL West game that doesn't get enough attention but absolutely matters in October standings conversations. The A's lineup is young and dangerous, and Sutter Health Park is a tough road environment. That said, if Soriano is on and the Angels come out with a focused offensive approach against Springs, they steal this one. Edge to the Angels in a tight, low-scoring game, 4-2.
